The Five Questions your Nonprofit Website should Answer

Have you ever seen an awesome cause on Facebook or Instagram, gotten really excited about it, only to visit the website and be thoroughly disappointed? Yeah, Me too. A strong social media presence is great and helps to draw in your target audience but your work doesn’t end once you’ve grabbed their attention. A  solid website is necessary if you want to captivate and keep your audience. There five basic questions every nonprofit website should answer to turn visitors into donors. With just a few simple questions, you can communicate the story of your organization’s mission effectively and get results.

A solid website is necessary if you want to captivate and keep your audience

  1. Who are you? This is the first topic your website should cover. Clearly define exactly who you are and what you do early on so that your audience can identify with you. Prospective donors are looking to understand and identify with the people behind an organization so start by putting a face to your brand.
  2. What is your ‘why’? This is your golden opportunity to tell us your story. Why do you serve this particular group of people? What drew you to this cause in the first place? It’s hard to grab someone’s attention if you aren’t letting your passion shine through. Take the time to explain the back story of how your organization was formed.
  3. Who do you serve? This is just as important as explaining who you are when it comes to your mission. Seeing where a charitable donation goes and who is directly affected by it is a major factor when deciding where to make a contribution.
  4. Why should we care? After telling us your about why you’re so passionate about this cause, you must tell your readers why they should be passsionate too. This is the time to show off your salesmanship.
  5. How can we help your mission? You’ve introduced yourself and your mission. We understand who you serve and why you serve them. Once you have your readers hooked you MUST provide resources for us to help you. Whether its a number to call and volunteer, a gofundme account or a link to buy tickets to your next fundraiser. Your site is incomplete if it does not include a call to action for the the site visitor and appropriate links for us to help your cause. Also be sure to include links to your social media pages and share buttons so your audience can help you spread awareness of your organization.

Hashtag Lunchbag

Hashtaglunchbag

1 in 6 Michigan residents struggle with hunger. In the City of Flint, 41.6% of residents are living at or below poverty level. There is no hard data to indicate exactly how many people are missing meals on a frequent basis but there is a growing movement aiming to end hunger, one lunch bag at a time.

I spoke with Tynee Sims of #HashtagLunchbag Flint and she shared the organization’s mission and background with me. #HashtagLunchbag is a social movement that started in Los Angeles on Christmas in 2012. A group of friends were searching for a way to give back to the community in a meaningful way. Their actions took social media by storm and they dubbed the movement #HashtagLunchbag.

The concept of #HashtagLunchbag came to Flint when marketing manager Chuniq Impower gathered a few of her close friends with the goal of feeding the underserved in our community while raising awareness through social media. Since coming together in March of 2014, #HashtagLunchbag Flint has hosted 5 events and served over 4,000 lunches in the community. Not only do their lunch bags include things like sandwiches, water and fruit but also inspirational hand-written notes designed to uplift and encourage.

There are a few different ways you can join #HashtagLunchbag in their hunger-ending mission. Join us on June 18th at The Local 432 located at 124 W. 1st street in Flint Mi from 10:00am until 1:00 pm and assist with sandwich making, inspirational note writing or distribution. Can’t make the event? You can still make an impact by making a monetary donation here.

On Saturday June 18th I will be joining #HashtagLunchbag as they do their part by serving our community. I hope to see you there!

Join us on June 18th 10am at the Local 432.

Guests were greeted with live music from artist Nelle Nichole as well as a delicious spread. Beauty ensued as each attendee indulged in complimentary manicures, lash extensions and much more!

Did you miss the brunch? Not to worry. A little birdie told me that another one is in the works as we speak. Stay tuned for more details! In the meantime you can support Outreach 20:35 and their mission by following here to stay up-to-date on future events.
